ADHD Issues in College/Third Level

Students with ADHD face new challenges when they start college particularly if they are living away from home. Starting college and changing your living situation requires organization and focus - two areas that are problematic for those with ADHD. An assistant professor at the University of Alabama, Matthew A Jarrett, noted that college students also face problems related to “executive functioning.”

“Executive functioning is a term that describes some of the higher level functions of the brain such as planning, organization, working memory, etc.,” Jarrett said. “One of the challenges of coming to college is that students are asked to be much more independent, so these executive functioning abilities become even more important.”
