Autism: Home Sensory Exercises Improve Autism Symptoms

Simple exercises done at home can improve autism symptoms according to a new study published in Behavioral Neuroscience.  In the study, parents were given specific sensory enrichment exercises to do with their children twice a day.  The exercises involved multi-sensory stimulation using a kit provided by the researchers.  The kit contained objects including sponges, sandpaper, bubble wrap and essential oils for use in the exercises.

The study participants were monitored throughout a six month period.  The researchers found that over 40% of the children who performed the sensory enrichment exercises over this period showed significant improvements in social behavior and responses to sights and sounds.
