4 Free Online Courses to Help Special Needs Parents

As a special needs parent, I try to learn as much as I can about special needs and special education so I can help my son.  Yet, like other parents, it is difficult to find time to do this research.  I recently rediscovered the world of online education and found some classes that will help parents of children with special needs and disabilities understand their children's needs and ways to help them.

These online courses are great because they are:
  • They are free.
  • You study at your own pace.
  • The course is available when you are
  • You do as much or as little work as you want.

Why take a course?

Special needs parents act as advocates for their children.  To be an effective advocate, you must:
  • understand your child's condition and child's needs
  • know the types of accommodations available to your child
  • understand how teachers can differentiate instruction for your child
  • learn about special education law
  • appreciate what is actually happening at your school and others.

Even if you learn just one thing or get one idea from a course, you are better able to advocate and support your child.
