Super Bowl Sunday is a time of celebration, especially for fans of the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. The excitement of the game and celebrations with friends and family make it easy to forget the implications of what you are eating and drinking. Try to remember these tips so you can enjoy a healthy super Sunday.

1. Limit Alcoholic Drinks
"When drinking in groups such as at a Super Bowl party, it is easy to get carried away," said Jason Rice, MD, "The inherent emotions attached to sporting events also can increase alcohol consumption, whether it's celebrating a big play from your favorite team or 'drowning your sorrows' following a poor performance."

More than three drinks for women and four for men is considered binge drinking, according to Dr. Rice. Know your limits and drink in moderation.

2. If you are drinking, get a designated driver.
If you plan to drink alcohol while watching the Super Bowl, arrange for a designated driver. Alternatively, look into public transportation or arrange for a taxi to bring you home.

3. Take precautions against the flu

The Super Bowl increases the level of person-to-person contact as people gather at parties, bars and restaurants to watch the game. "You’re going to the bar or to peoples’ homes for watch parties and you’re double dipping the chip – or somebody else is – and you’re spreading the flu,” said Dr. Charles Stoecker, PhD. “Football fans might contract a mild case of influenza, but then pass it on to other, potentially more susceptible people.”

Stoecker advises fans to get vaccinated, practice good hygiene, wash their hands and be careful about any dip. You can find more tips on flu prevention at Flu.gov and on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website.
