5 Free Online Autism Courses

If you have a child with autism like me, you try to learn as much about autism as possible. If you want to learn more, or help a relative or friend understand autism better, there are several free online courses to choose from.


1.   AUTISM (Swinburne University of Technology)



Swinburne University
This is one of the most recent autism course offerings and is delivered by Swinburne University of Technology. The course is for parents and carer’s of people with autism. "The autism MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) takes a very practical approach to autism…through the lens of inclusivity, fostering understanding and equipping participants with the skills and knowledge to solve practical issues in (their) lives...," lecturer Emma Donaldson said.


This course starts on Thursday 2 April 2015 and a certificate is available to participants when they finish the course.

2.   AUTISM AND RELATED DISORDERS (Yale University)



Materials for this seminar are from Yale's undergraduate (3rd level) course.

The course is self-paced, so you can learn when it suits you.  Course topics include:

3.   FOUNDATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS: AN ONLINE COURSE (by the Waisman Center at University of Wisconsin-Madison)

"The purpose of this course is to advance a common understanding of core principles, concepts, knowledge and practices about autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as derived from a comprehensive review of the literature. The course content provides foundation for educational and community-based support of individuals with ASD and their families."

"This online course is open to interested users, including parents, individuals with an autism spectrum disorders, professionals and students in education, health and social services fields, and interested members of the community."

4.   AUTISM 101 (By Autism Society)


This is a short course of about 30 minutes, covering the following topics:

5.   APPS FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (Apple Educators)
